Welcome to Bali - Welcome to "The Morning of the
World" |

Bali
boasts lush garden forests, beautiful beaches and incredible rice paddies
spilling down the sides of mountains – and so much more.
It has a
strong Hindu spiritual life, with more than 50,000 temples,
and a rich culture
of dancing, music, art,
architecture, and festivals. A trip around the island is
highly recommended.
Most villages are around half a day away by road, so it is
worthwhile hiring a car, jeep or moped, or arranging a rate for a private cab..
Culture
Bali is truly a unique isle from its
timeless traditions, colorful ,
The people possess a genuine sense inner
happiness that is perhaps attributed to the strong Hindu faith.
HISTORY
"The Household"
There are many modern Balinese houses, but there are still
a great number of
traditional Balinese homes.
The streets of Ubud; nearly every house will follow
the same traditional walled design.
BALI'S CASTE SYSTEM
Balinese society is founded on the Hindu caste system, although in
a somewhat
simpler form than that practiced in India.
In Bali, there are four castes; Sudra, the peasants who comprise over 90% of the population, Wesia, the
warrior caste, which also includes traders and some nobility, Satria, the caste
of kings, and Pedanda, the holy men and priests (brahman).
The caste of a person is indicated by their title; Ida Bagus for
brahman,
Agung or Dewa , Satrias,
Each caste has its own language, and a separate dialect exists to enable someone
.

Marriage
Every Balinese expects to marry and raise a family, and marriage takes places at
a comparatively young age.
Marriages are not, in general, arranged as they are
in many other Asian communities although strict rules apply to marriages between
the castes.
There are two basic forms of marriage in Bali - mepadik and ngerorod.
The respectable form, in which the family of the man visit the family of the
woman and politely propose that the marriage take place, is mepadik.
The
Balinese, however, like their fun and often prefer marriage by elopement
(ngerorod) as the most exciting option.
Of course, the Balinese are also a practical people so nobody is too
surprised when the young man spirits away his bride-to-be, even if she
loudly protests about being kidnapped.
The couple go into hiding and somehow the girl's parents, no matter how
assiduously they search,
never manage to find her. Eventually the couple re-emerge, announce that it
is too late to stop them now, the marriage is officially recognized
and everybody has had a lot of fun and games. Marriage by elopement has
another advantage apart from being exciting and mildly heroic it'scheaper.
Here some with many Balinese ceremonies days, a
current Balinese calendar.
"Banyupinaruh"
The day after saraswati is caled banyupinaruh, which always falls on a Sunday
and the first pawukon week,
Dasa sinta. as with many Balinese ceremonies days, banyupinaruh come
around every seven calendar months
{the Balinese will say six, because they mean six Balinese caka
calendar months}.
To find out when it occurs each year, you will need to ask a Balinese or refer
to a current Balinese calendar. On Banyupinaruh, Hindu devotees get up very
early on this day to bathe at
dawn,
for those who live close to the beach, they'll choose to make a pilgrimage to
the sea; others will go to rivers or similar watering places
Most people pray or at least place
offerings on the beach before bathing or swimming. offerings are normally simple canang sari box offerings made of palm leaf, packed with colorful flowers and
completed with an incense stick spiked in the sand.
After praying, they enter the
water in their clothes or in a sarong wrapped around their bodies
{you won't see many Balinese in bikinis!}.they then cleanse and
purify their bodies with the water to purge negative emotions. after
bathing, people return home, change into clean traditional dress and
pray.
These days, since most people
have bathrooms in their houses, many just bathe at home in water and
fragrant flowers {yeh kumkuman} whilst reciting a prayer or mantra,
then put on traditional dress and pray in their family temple {merajan}.
Balinese say that compared with
just taking a regular bath or shower, bathing on this holy day makes
them feel refreshed and revitalized
Tumpek kandang
On this special day, farm animal in Bali get very special attention:
the cows are washed in the river and dressed - up like human being,
with special cone- shaped coconut leaves placed on their
horns. the pigs are decorated, with their bellies wrapped with a
white or yellow cloth. the farm animals are fed with delicious food.
This ritual is certainly not an animal worship ritual ,
the Balinese consider these animal as friends of life and fellow brothers
created by god as living creatures . human life is much assisted by
animal, especially in satisfying the needs for food, labor force ,
religious ceremonies and for income. for the sake of preservation
and prosperity of such animals, the Balinese plead to the gods for
the animals well being.
Tilem kelima
People all around the island present offering and pray for blessings
from Ida shyang whidi wasa { almighty god}.
Ceremonies at the main temples {pura desa, pura dalem, and pura
agung} and family temple. |
